The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) is leading the charge for a greener Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) industry, calling on stakeholders to adopt its groundbreaking Circularity Guideline. This initiative aims to establish high standards for managing end-of-life batteries, with a focus on quality, durability, warranties, maintenance, repair, and sound recycling practices.
Organizations, companies, and other key players in the DRE sector have been invited to endorse this transformative policy by signing a Letter of Commitment to sustainable battery practices. Companies that pledge their support will be featured across ARE’s communication channels, reaching over 60,000 global subscribers.
In partnership with the “Partnership for Responsible Battery and Metal Recycling” (ProBaMet), ARE is also addressing the critical issue of Used Lead-Acid Battery (ULAB) recycling. More importantly, this is a pivotal moment for the DRE industry to embrace sustainability and drive lasting change in energy and environmental stewardship.
Furthermore, a landmark conference, ProBaMet: Upgrading the Lead-Acid Battery Recycling Sector in the African Region, will be held in Abuja on March 18th – 19th, 2025. This event will unite stakeholders from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, and Cameroon to explore industry challenges, regulatory solutions, and a Pan-African strategy for responsible battery recycling.
ARE’s call to action underscores the importance of collective responsibility in safeguarding the environment and public health in emerging markets. Stakeholders across the DRE spectrum are urged to join this initiative, demonstrating their commitment to a sustainable future.
