The Fanfair forecast, funded by the European Union to manage floods in West Africa, has projected that within 10 days, seven local government areas in Yobe state could experience significant flooding, according to a report by Dailypost.
The areas expected to be affected include Yusufari, Yunusari, Bursari, Geidam, Karasuwa, Nguru, and Bade.
Fanfair’s prediction assigns a severity level of 3 to the Nuguru region, while other places fall under severity levels 2 and 1, which exceed the normal threshold.
In a separate forecast by Glofas on Thursday, it was indicated that there’s an increasing risk of flooding with a 5-year return period. This elevated risk might reach its peak within the next 10 days in the mentioned local government areas.
In terms of rainfall, the Glofas forecast suggests a 70-80% likelihood of extreme rainfall surpassing 50mm across Yobe and Adamawa States.
The combination of intense rainfall and rising water levels is expected to raise the likelihood of flooding in the next 10 days.
The forecast warns of a high risk of flood warning level 3 for certain LGAs in Yobe State over the next 10 days.
To address this situation, the state government, alongside the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and other partners, is intensifying efforts. They’re involving local authorities and communities in the at-risk areas to monitor and prepare for potential flooding.
Mrs. Husna Ibrahim, Director of Information Services at the Ministry of Home Affairs Information and Culture, conveyed this information in a statement released on Friday in Damaturu.
She urged the authorities in the mentioned local governments to closely observe heavy rainfall and rising water levels along the Yobe River in the coming 10 days due to the medium possibility of heavy rainfall and strong water discharge. Additionally, she advised them to update their flood contingency plans.
She emphasized that the LGAs should monitor the potential for riverine flooding and strong winds, and offer technical assistance if required.
