The Kwara State Government has taken a proactive step towards mitigating the impact of climate change on its citizens by inaugurating the State Inter-Ministerial Committee on Climate Change (KWAICCC).
In a statement, Mallam Shehu Ndanusa Usman, the Commissioner for Environment, emphasized the government\’s commitment to fostering a safer environment and reducing climate-related hazards.
He underscored the importance of assembling a committee comprising policy and decision-makers from relevant ministries, departments, and agencies, attributing the move to the significant impacts of climate change on both people and the environment. The committee\’s primary role, as outlined by Mallam Ndanusa, includes identifying climate change impacts and integrating adaptive strategies into the state\’s policy and sectoral planning.
The responsibilities of the KWAICCC were further delineated, encompassing the establishment of a communication channel between the government and communities, advising on overcoming policy implementation barriers, addressing emergent climate change issues, and actively seeking funding opportunities and grants. Mallam Ndanusa urged the committee members to embrace their roles as a means of contributing to the overall development of Kwara State.
Hajia Afusat Ibrahim, the Permanent Secretary, expressed gratitude to Governor Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his unwavering commitment to the welfare of the state\’s residents. She assured the committee of the government\’s full support in tackling the challenging task ahead, highlighting the collaborative effort required to effectively address climate change impacts in Kwara State.
