In a State House Press Statement released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media & Publicity at the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, today February 17, 2024, \”Nigeria has declared readiness to host the African Central Bank and prioritizes youth preparedness for 21st century economy\”.
The President of Nigeria, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR declared Nigeria\’s readiness to host the African Central Bank, aligning with the vision outlined in the Abuja Treaty at the ongoing 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
President Tinubu assured leaders that his administration would collaborate with the African Union Commission and member states to ensure the successful launch of the bank as scheduled in 2028. Emphasizing the importance of solidarity, Tinubu highlighted the need for a firm resolution to address the challenges facing the continent.
Discussing obstacles such as climate change and global trade patterns, President Tinubu acknowledged both external and self-inflicted challenges, including coup-induced autocracies and constitutional tinkering. He urged African nations to focus on fostering democratic governance and economic development, steering clear of pitfalls that hinder progress.
Addressing recent military takeovers in Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, President Tinubu emphasized the need for regional cooperation, stating that disagreements should not lead to permanent ruptures within ECOWAS. He expressed a commitment to creating a new era of trust and accord, extending an invitation to dialogue for those willing to engage in good faith.
Turning to the summit\’s theme of education, President Tinubu underscored its critical role in finding creative solutions to Africa\’s challenges. He highlighted Nigeria\’s commitment to education, with initiatives ranging from school feeding programs to becoming an Information and Communication Technology hub, aimed at equipping youth for success in the global economy of the 21st century.
In a concluding note, President Tinubu extended an invitation to the Africa Counter-Terrorism Summit in Abuja, scheduled for April 2024. The summit aims to comprehensively address the root causes of violent extremism, addressing issues such as poverty, political access, and the spread of hateful ideologies.
