With heavy hearts, we share the sorrowful news of the passing of Dr. Saleemul Huq, who left us late last night in Bangladesh.
Dr. Huq, affectionately known as Dr. Saleemul, was an eminent figure in the field of climate activism. He dedicated himself to the cause, attending every annual UN climate conference (COP) without fail. Driven by an unwavering commitment to climate justice, he tirelessly advocated for industrialized nations to acknowledge the consequences of climate loss and damage, a battle he had fought for over three decades.
He consistently raised his voice to hold industrialized countries accountable for their promises of adaptation funding and championed the voices of those on the frontlines of the climate crisis. Dr. Saleemul possessed a unique ability to unite people and forge consensus, even if it meant making the representatives of industrialized nations uncomfortable.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Huq was a man of the people. He radiated kindness and generosity, especially towards young researchers and activists, and vigorously promoted scholars and knowledge from the global south. He made time for everyone and brought warmth and hope to a field often filled with despair. Saleem bhai mentored countless global scholars, advocating passionately for research, advocacy, and the well-being of Bangladesh, the global south, and the world at large.
A part of Dr. Saleemul\’s legacy lives on through the countless individuals he inspired and paved the way for, to join the fight for those most affected by climate change, including ourselves. His passing is a profound loss, not only for Bangladesh but for the entire world. We remain forever grateful for the love and service he shared during his time on this planet. We are committed to upholding his legacy and continuing his vital work in the global fight for climate justice.
