SUSTAINABLE TRAINING FOR TEENAGERS AND YOUTH IN BARIGA: WASTE ACADEMY 1.0 COMPLETED

We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of Waste Academy 1.0, a sustainable training program for teenagers and youth in Bariga. Our journey began on August 21st, with a focus on the theoretical teachings of opportunities in waste management and the potential for innovation and creativity to address environmental challenges.

Throughout our discussions, one thing became clear: the importance of instilling environmental consciousness in young minds. The Academy made a collective decision to foster a community of environmentally conscious individuals in various settings, including homes, schools, religious centers, markets, and our broader community.

During our time together, we explored innovative ways to upcycling various waste materials, such as bottles, nylons, papers, animal waste (such as cow horns), used clothes, plastics, buckets, tires, and coconut shells. Our efforts garnered recognition when we were featured in the LAWMA newsletter on the 23rd of August, where we shared our motivation and plans for the environmental space.

A significant highlight of our journey was our visit to the waste management center at the National Armed Forces Resettlement Center (NAFRIC), Oshodi, Lagos State, Nigeria. This experience further deepened our understanding of waste management and inspired us to continue making a positive impact in our communities.

On August 31st, 2023, we bid farewell to the participants, filled with a whirlwind of emotions, well wishes, and unforgettable memories. We are immensely grateful to the exceptional facilitators who shared their knowledge, expertise, and practical skills to guide us through the program.

We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the amazing teams who played a crucial role in making this program a success. Our gratitude goes out to the Convener, Suliyat Y. Oguns, and the Waste and Environmental Sustainability Team (W.E.S.T) for their unwavering dedication to driving sustainable change.

Special recognition goes to the Supervisor for Environment, Otunba Adegboyega Adefuwa, the entire Environmental team, all officers, executives in Bariga LCDA, and all residents of Bariga LCDA under the leadership of Hon Kolade Alabi David. Their transformation agenda has inspired and motivated us to pursue creativity and create greater impacts in the environmental sector.

As we reflect on our journey, we leave you with the motto of the Waste and Environmental Sustainability Team (W.E.S.T): \”It\’s not waste until you waste it.\” Together, let\’s continue to find innovative solutions and make a positive difference in our environment.
